Abruzzo is a region with a long tradition: there can be found proofs in the ancient times, from the period in which lived the Greek historian Polibio (206-124 a.C.) to that of the Roman poet Ovidio (43 a.C.-18 d. C.). Until the Renaissance the production was mainly made in the province of L’Aquila; then it has been extended and transformed in particular during the second half of the Nineteenth century. Specialization began after more or less a century and located in areas particularly suitable to wine production, because favoured by the weather: having the sea on the east side and the mountains on the west side creates a good movement of air and ideal conditions for the cultivation of high quality grapes.
