Why is it called Milano Marittima?

Milano Marittima: What has always been missing in Milan? The sea of course. And it was missing even in the early ‘900 when in Italy and throughout Europe began to spread the idea of tourism that we know today. Great hotels on lakes and beaches, spas, impeccable services, a standard of excellence for those who could afford long trips to discover Europe.

Or a trip to Italy in the footsteps of the adventurous one described by Goethe almost two centuries earlier.

It is in this context that the Maffei family, important Milanese mining industrialists, thought to give the sea to Milan and its industrial and commercial bourgeoisie. He decided to build in Cervia, Emilia Romagna, Milano Marittima. A seaside town with luxury villas and gardens.

Today Milano Marittima is one of the most famous places of the Romagna Riviera, with large tree-lined avenues where you can walk shopping, beaches full of services, a trendy nightlife, which includes some of the most famous local deli of Italy and the pine forest that still offers its silence and the relief of the breeze to who wants to enjoy it in the hot summer afternoons.

The origin of Milano Marittima: this is why it is called so?

As we have seen, Milano Marittima was founded in the early 1900s with the aim of giving the Milanese bourgeoisie its holiday resort for the summer.

In 1907 the first agreement was concluded with the Municipality to obtain the land. Then took over the then famous painter and poster art nouveau Giuseppe Palanti who cultivated the utopia of a garden city by the sea. The project of Palanti saw Milano Marittima as the natural extension of the pine forest of Cervia, but was implemented only in part for the war. With the outbreak of the First World War, in fact, the development of Milano Marittima underwent a pause and then resumed in the 1920s when it became one of the favorite destinations of upper-middle class families.

In 1927 Cervia was recognized by a ministerial decree as a health resort and tourism thanks to Milano Marittima. After the construction of the villas were also built the first hotels, restaurants and colonies. After the Second World War there was a further increase in urban planning that definitively consecrated Milano Marittima as one of the most famous seaside resorts in Italy.
