Castelvetro di Modena: where is it?

Castelvetro di Modena is a small fortified village located in Emilia Romagna and specifically in the province of Modena. The territory still retains a strong link with the wine tradition. In fact here we are in the hills of Lambrusco that is cultivated together with the Trebbiano grape variety that is used for the production of balsamic vinegar.

The historic center of the ancient village has treasures to discover. Its origin dates back to the Etruscan era and then became one of the Roman legions. Later these territories came to the Monastery of Nonantola. There is also a wonderful medieval castle dating back to the year one thousand and which today is home to the Wine Museum.

What to see in Castelvetro di Modena?

The village of Castelvetro di Modena still preserves evidence of the past and in particular of the medieval period. In fact, you should know that one of the symbols of this town are the medieval towers. The small village was once surrounded by walls that you can still see today in the south east and south west of Castelvetro di Modena.

The beating heart of the village is Piazza Roma from which you can enjoy a splendid view of the plain below. Its peculiarity consists in the fact that its flooring of white and black slabs that is made of checkerboard. Here is also the ancient medieval clock tower. This is undoubtedly one of the symbols of the village of Castelvetro.

It represents what remains of the ancient structure of the castle walls in the east and was erected in the 11th and 12th centuries. But that’s not all, in fact there are also two important buildings, the municipal and Palazzo Rinaldi. Another important building located in a nearby square is the Parish Church. Also here there is also Palazzo Rangoni which was erected together with the castle.

In 1564 this place hosted the poet Torquato Tasso in fuga Bologna. Finally another place to visit in this small village is the municipal vinegar factory where the famous balsamic vinegar of Modena is produced.
