Vinitaly, The Italian Wine Culture

The most important event dedicated to wine held in Italy celebrates 50 years! We are speaking of course of Vinitaly, the official event that promotes the production system of Italian wine in the world. Recognized as a strategic economic lever for the internationalization of Italian wine companies, Vinitaly has had the merit of marking the evolution of the national and international wine system, while helping to make wine one of the most engaging and dynamic Italian production realities.

Establishes in 1967 with the “Wine Days“, the International Wine and Spirits Exhibition is organized every year in April at the Fiera di Verona area just outside the city, where the fair and all major events are hosted. The first edition was held in the Palazzo della Gran Guardia, on the main square of the city, but it was only in 1971 that the great festival took on the name with which it is currently known world-wide. Seven years later, in 1978, it achieved “international” status and opened its doors to the participation of foreign companies. Over time, the story of Vinitaly has always been enriched adding more events, becoming a long-awaited popular event by both Italian and foreigners. On the occasion, Verona is tainted in Vinitaly purple for four days: not only wine and food , but also music, shows and meetings in the company of well-known guests who until midnight tell the story of wine through design , fashion, architecture and art.

Manufacturers, importers, distributors, caterers, technicians and journalists are the protagonists of this great Italian fair, which covers over 95,000 sq meters, with more than 4,000 exhibitors each year. Each of the 21 regions of Italy is represented in 18 pavilions, among which runs a maze of passages that recreates all the itineraries of Italian wine. There are over fifty thematic tastings of Italian and foreign wines that are offered to visitors, along with a rich conference program that addresses the key issues related to the supply and demand in the wine market.

In addition to the exhibition area devoted to wine producers, the show consists of workshops, buyers clubs and special display areas designated to promoting Made in Italy and raise awareness for emerging companies on the market. In conjunction with the fair, the fuorisalone Vinitaly goes on in the historic center of the city in the Palazzo della Gran Guardia. Vinitaly for you is open to all wine enthusiasts, usually in the evening, and it includes tastings, a wine bar and live music events. The International Agro-Foods event is also noteworthy, which aims to promote olive-growing excellence and Italian and international food.

In 1998 the festival went beyond national borders for the first time and arrived in Shanghai, China, with China Wine, an event that opened the way for new adventures on an international level, such as with the Vinitaly US Tour in Chicago and San Francisco in 2003, Vinitaly India in 2005, Vinitaly Japan in 2006, then arriving to the creation of Vinitaly in the world in 2013, a project started by VeronaFiere to promote Italian wine in the world. It will now take on the name Vinitaly International.
