Easter Monday between rites, traditions and new needs of freedom

There is a day in Italy that does not appear in the religious calendars as a solemnity, but each year tells something profound about our way of being. It is the Monday of the Angel, which we all call simply Easter: the day of the trip, of the lunch outdoors, of the freedom found.

It is the festival of Italy that gets back on its feet, taking a break from the daily frenzy.

Easter Monday 2025: desire for normality and nature

After the difficult years that have marked the last decade – pandemics, energy crises, international tensions – Easter Monday 2025 takes on an even deeper flavor.

According to data from Coldiretti, more than 7 out of 10 Italians have decided to spend the day outdoors: in parks, in the countryside, on the hills or along the beaches. Farms and picnics are back to be the most popular destinations, followed by cultural trips and visits to historic villages. It is not just a desire for escape. It’s a collective need to breathe. To slow down. To return to a more human and less virtual dimension. Even for just one day.

A rite that crosses generations

Today the youngest organize digital detox excursions, “green” lunches with local products, food and wine experiences. Families choose educational farms, nature parks, small museums.  The common thread is always the same: reconnecting, with others and with oneself.

Between faith and legend: the original meaning of the Monday of the Angel

Few remember the religious significance of the day. The Monday of the Angel commemorates the meeting between the angel and the women at the empty tomb of Jesus, according to the Gospels. An announcement of resurrection that, over time, has become an invitation to joy, to sharing, to come out of oneself and return to life.

Perhaps this is why, even today, the day after Easter pushes us out of our homes. To look for something even a moment of peace.
