Perugina: Italian Chocolate

It’s difficult not to mention all the delicious things to eat and especially Italian chocolate without considering one of the major food companies present on the tables of all Italians during the holidays: Perugina.

Perugina is the leading company in Italy with regard to the production of Italian chocolate of the highest quality. Its history is very old, made of constant growth and development and perennial research for perfection. And winter is the perfect time to indulge in a little tasting. Also because of the cold weather, no one can refuse a nice hot chocolate. And as we all know it’s not really winter without the fragrance of chocolate, mandarins and cinnamon!

The history of Perugina

Perugina was born initially as a sugared almond factory in 1907, in Perugia. In 1915 the company was transferred to Fontivegge and, following a huge economic investment, it started to produce cocoa powder. The presses for the extraction of cocoa butter were also purchased. In 1917 Cacao Perugina was born, with a registered trademark. And It was only a few years later that the first selling point was opened on Fifth Avenue in New York.

Not long before, the first great ideas were developed which have managed to resist the passing of time: the Luisa bar, the Baci and banana chocolates. In 2005, finally, the company opened the doors to dark chocolate creating the “Nero” line, dedicated exclusively to the purest chocolate. And last but not least, the Christmas and Easter Perugina specialities, which are included in the celebrations of the Italian holiday.

Perugina products

Perugina has always produced Italian chocolates of the highest quality. The company proposes products for markets between luxury and accessibility. The chocolate, in fact, has slightly higher costs than that of supermarket brands, but can be found in any Italian store, be it large or small, and guarantees a premium quality.

The flagship product is certainly the praline: the famous Baci  which inside contain a little note with a quotation, the Grifo and the famous Liù and Banana, crispy chocolates with a soft filling. Famous are also the classic chocolate bars, ranging from simple milk and fudge to the more elaborate, flavoured in endless different versions. The limited editions of Perugina chocolates for Christmas and Easter complete the product catalogue.
