The month of May can also be called “ May month of roses ” as it is in this particular period of the year that one of the most beautiful and appreciated flowers comes into blossom, the rose, precisely. Until a few years ago it was one of the most anticipated times of the year since the first roses started to blossom and their beauty was even more precious. Giving roses in May meant leaving behind the cold winter and allowing new love to bloom. Today roses are easily available at any time of the year. Italian Traditions will guide you on the discovery of an event dedicated to the theme of roses organized by the FAI to introduce you to the best characteristics of this flower. This is Roses of May, an initiative that takes place at Villa Della Porta Bozzolo in Casalzuigno in the province of Varese. The event is held during the last three weekends in May, precisely on the days of 12th-13th -19th -20th and 26th -27th.

The event

The FAI (Italian Environmental Fund) is a non-profit foundation created in 1975 in order to protect and enhance the historical, artistic and landscaped heritage of Italy. Every year in the month of May the FAI organizes an event centered around roses. Visitors will enter a sort of museum and be inebriated by the perfumes and colors. During the event organized at Villa Della Porta Bozzolo it will be possible to meet plant specialists to learn the techniques of cultivating roses, to take part in laboratories and guided visits inside the Rose Garden. Also, you will have the opportunity, by participating in activities and conferences, to get to know the world that revolves around this extraordinary flower.

During the first weekend of the event, on the days of 12th -13th May some selected exhibitors will be present from the province of Varese. This is an opportunity to learn more and receive advice about this beautiful flower and, why not, buy the different varieties more suitable for your garden. You can also receive valuable advice on the different themes concerning roses. The second weekend 19th -20th May is dedicated to the exhibition of products made with these flowers, from cosmetics to food, from face creams to rose ice cream. The last weekend of 26th – 27th May sees a Riot of roses presented by the best Italian producers. During the days of the event workshops will be organized for children as well as guided tours of the villa, and the most passionate will be able to buy seedlings, specialized books about the maintenance of roses and gardening tools.

Where is the Rose of May event held?

The Villa where the event takes place is just a few kilometres away from Varese and Lake Maggiore and since the 90s has been managed by the FAI, which is responsible for organizing the events and guided tours. Its construction dates back to 1500 and it was the country residence of the rich local family Della Porta. In 1700 it became a holiday villa and was renovated on the occasion of the wedding between Gian Angelo III Della Porta and the Milanese Countess Isabella Giulini. The windows of the Villa overlook the Italian garden. And today it is possible to visit this summer dwelling consisting of salons and lounges, frescoed galleries and bedrooms during guided tours.

How to reach it and take part in the event

To reach the FAI event dedicated to the month of the Roses, you have to take the motorway A8 Milano-Varese and exit at Vergiate-Sesto. Then head towards Besozzo-Laveno. After passing the village of Gemonio, continue towards Valcuvia-Luino until you reach your destination. By train you can reach the station of Cittiglio. From here it is possible to continue by bus line to reach the place of the event.

Access to the event involves the purchase of a ticket which is free for FAI members. For non-members the cost of the entire ticket is 9 euros while the reduced ticket costs 4 euros. A family ticket is also available at the cost of 22 euros for 2 adults and 2 children.

The FAI deals with the protection of Italian historical and cultural heritage and every year organizes interesting events that attract many visitors. One of these takes place during the three weekends of May and is dedicated to the typical flower of this month.
