Wine and wineyards of Molise

 

In the region of Molise the grape cultivation is made both on the hill and on mountain areas and it has ancient origins. It has started from the Samnites (around fourth century a.C.) and continued to Romans, who extended it in other and wider lands (the Samnites occupied an area which included the present North-East of Campania, great part of Molise, the North of Puglia and Lucania and the Southern part of Abruzzo. As many other Italian regions, also Molise can count on a long and strengthened wine tradition.
Cultivation areas are the hills of Biferno valley, Campobasso, the land under Termoli and the hinterland towards the border with Campania and along the Volturno river.

Main vine varieties: Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Aglianico, Bovale Grande, Barbera, Cabernet, Ciliegiolo and Pinot Nero, Trebbiano Toscano, Falanghina, Bombino Bianco, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Greco and Moscato Bianco.

Main red wines: Aglianico del Molise Contado Riserva, Molise Tintilia Riserva, Biferno Rosso Ramitello, Molise Rosso Don Luigi, Molise novello, Molise Cabernet Sauvignon, Molise Sangiovese, Pentro di Isernia Rosso.

Main white wines: Biferno, Chardonnay, Greco, Falanghina, Moscato, Pinot bianco, Sauvignon, Trebbiano, Pentro di Isernia.

Main rosé: Biferno, Pentro di Isernia.

Main sparkling: Moscato, Pinot nero, Chardonnay.

Main sweet wines: Falanghina, Moscato bianco, Osco (or Terre degli Osci), Rotae.
