The history of Lucca

As for the origins of the city, several theories agree that these territories were inhabited by the Etruscans and even earlier by the Ligurians. In fact, the name of the city derives from the Celto-Ligurian word Luk which means swampy terrain.  

The first archaeological finds and the first reliable sources date back to 180 A. C. when Lucca became a Latin colony. In 89 A. C. Lucca became an important Roman town hall to welcome  

Caesar, Pompey and Crassus in 56 A.C. for the birth of the triunvirate. After the fall of the Roman Empire the Tuscan city became the scene of the barbarian invasions by the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines and the Lombards. After the domination of the latter in 990 Lucca became part of the Kingdom of the Franks and acquired great importance with Charlemagne. In 1161 was born the free town of Lucca that consolidated for the following centuries.

In this historical period the city is opposed to the nearby Pisa. In the Renaissance period it regained economic prosperity thanks to commercial activities such as the production of silk. In 1628 the Tuscan city became an oligarchic Republic governed by a general council. In 1814 Lucca was occupied by the Bourbons and the Austrians and with the congress of Vienna became a Duchy. In 1861 Lucca became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
