Wines and Wineyards of Calabria

 

Vines cultivation in the region of Calabria has very faraway origins, to the ancient Greece. It have been the Greeks, actually, to develop the wine-producing and growing activity in this land (and in this soil particularly fertile), with a prevalence of red berry vines. The three main areas for the cultivation are the Pollino massif, the Sila tabeland to the Tirreno and Ionio seas and the Aspromonte massif.

 

Main vine varieties: Gaglioppo, Greco bianco e nero, Magliocco, Mantonico, Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio.

Main red wines: Cirò, Val di Neto, Bivongi, Donnici, Lamezia, Melissa, Pollino, Savuto, Scavigna, Verbicaro.

Main white wines: Bivongi, Cirò, Donnici, Greco, Lamezia, Melissa, San Vito di Luzzi, Scavigna, Verbicaro, Calabria Duale Bacca d’oro del Mediterraneo.

Main rosé: Bivongi, Cirò, Donnici, Lamezia, Sant’Anna, San Vito di Luzzi, Savuto, Scavigna, Verbicaro, Val di Neto.

Main sparkling: Vignaioli del Pollino, Tenuta dei Baroni Capoano, Cantine Riunite Cirò e Melissa, iGreco Gran cuvé Brüt, Altaquota Brüt.

Main sweet wines: Val di Neto, Moscato Passito, Greco di Bianco.
