Truffle fairs, the king of Italian cuisine

For millions of fans the truffle is the king of Italian cuisine. It is no coincidence that every year, lovers of the divine tuber and gourmet gather in four Italian cities to celebrate this product: Alba, San Miniato, Acqualagna and Pergola. Truffle fairs in these places celebrate the product and offer unique experiences in the context of their streets and their historical heritage.

Truffle fairs are food and wine events that celebrate the truffle, a spontaneous hypogeal mushroom highly prized for its intense aroma and its unmistakable flavor. The auctions can touch dizzying figures, but the smallest truffles are often also within the reach of many.

Alba, San Miniato, Acqualagna and Pergola: the celebratory events are organized in cities where the truffle is particularly renowned, attracting curious and enthusiasts.

During these events, visitors can attend various activities, from markets (producers who sell their precious collections in the form of fresh truffles, preserved and derived products such as oil, cheese and truffle sauces) to culinary exhibitions (chefs and cooks create special dishes based on truffles to demonstrate the different ways of using this precious ingredient) up to the laboratories (events where you can learn how to best match them with other ingredients).

Truffle fairs are not only an opportunity to taste and buy this delicious product, but also to immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of local communities that grow and collect truffles.

Each fair presents its own peculiarities and offers a unique perspective on this precious and much loved ingredient of Italian cuisine.

Alba, the world capital of truffles

Located in the Langhe, in the north-west of Italy, Alba is renowned for being the world capital of white truffles. Its truffle fair, held every year from October to December, is an unmissable event for lovers of gastronomy.

The city has a long history linked to the search and the collection of truffles, which here reaches its highest quality, with traditions handed down from generation to generation. This connection with the territory makes it considered the world capital of truffles.

It’s not just truffles. Alba fascinates visitors with its cobbled streets, the testimonies of the past and historic buildings, including the Federico Eusebio Civic Museum with its artefacts ranging from prehistoric to Roman times and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, a majestic Gothic building overlooking the main square (Piazza Risorgimento).

The surrounding hills are covered with vineyards as far as the eye can see that produce some of the finest Italian wines, such as Barolo and Barbaresco.

San Miniato, the jewel of the Tuscan hills

In the heart of the Tuscan hills, San Miniato is a town famous for its precious truffles (here are collected most of the white truffles of Italy) and for its annual white truffle fair.

San Miniato rises on a hill overlooking the Arno. It preserves a historical and architectural heritage spanning millennia of history, with the presence of medieval monuments and Romanesque churches. For example, the cathedral of San Maria Assunta and San Genesio is an extraordinary example of Romanesque architecture outside and neo-Renaissance style inside.

Do not miss the Rocca di Federico II, a thirteenth-century fortified tower that emerges on top of the hill of San Miniato and from the top of which you can enjoy a view that goes from the Apennines to the sea.

Acqualagna, the heart of the black truffle

Acqualagna is a small town located in the Marche in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, known as the center of the black truffle trade (here more than half of the entire national production is collected). Its annual fair is an unmissable event for lovers of this extraordinary mushroom.

In addition to truffles, Acqualagna is also renowned for its extraordinary variety of mushrooms, ranging from porcini mushrooms to nails, offering a real treat for food lovers.

The city is immersed in a natural setting surrounded by woods and mountains, ideal for outdoor activities and excursions. The narrow streets of the old town offer a charming and traditional atmosphere. You can not leave the village without visiting the Sanctuary of Pelingo and having seen the fresco of the Madonna and Child kept inside.

Pergola, the treasure of truffles in the Marche region

Pergola, also located in the Marche, is famous for its white truffle fair, an event that attracts enthusiasts and gourmets from all over the world.

The fair is an opportunity to visit the town characterized by winding streets and stone buildings that tell stories of past centuries. The Golden Bronzes and City Museum, located in the historic center, houses an extraordinary collection of archaeological finds that testify to the historical wealth of the area.
