Are you looking for interesting events taking place during this period? Well, the day when one of the main Italian traditions happens is approaching. In fact, Tuesday, February 6th the sixty-eight edition of the Sanremo Festival starts, one of the most followed Italian television programs. Here then are some curiosities and historical information about this singing contest that ends with the final evening of 10th February.
History
The festival is one of the most followed social events in Italy in recent years. The first edition took place in 1951 with the name Festival della Canzone italiana di Sanremo. Angelo Nicola Amato and Angelo Nizza had the intuition to organize this singing event. In the first edition there were only three performers who sang the songs in the competition. The editions up until 1954 were broadcast exclusively for radio from the casino of Sanremo. later it became exclusively a television event broadcast in Eurovision on Raiuno.
Here is another thing: the 1967 edition was marked by a terrible news event. The singer Luigi Tenco was found dead in his hotel room. The edition that has had more viewers than ever was that of 1987 in which the share reached 77%. The one that instead marked the negative record of spectators was the 2014 edition with only 47% of viewers.
To date there are a total of six singers who have won both in the VIP category and in the new proposals.
Where it takes place
Until 1976 the festival took place inside the casino theater of Sanremo, then from the following year, except for the 1990 edition that was held at the PalaFiori, it moved to the Ariston theater. This presents a space that allows to host a large stage that welcomes not only the singers in the competition but also the accompanying orchestra.
