Lucca Comics & Games

The highly anticipated event is back, combining comics, games, cinema, literature and music, giving attendees a unique multisensory experience. It is Lucca Comics & Games, which was held from Wednesday, October 30 to Sunday, November 3 in the city of Lucca in a super special version.

The tribute to Puccini

This year marks the centenary of Puccini’s birth, which inspired the Lucca Comics & Games 2024 to the point of making it a real operatic composition entitled “The Butterfly Effect”. The latter is not only a clear reference to Puccini’s masterpiece, but also refers to the well-known “Butterfly Effect”, a corollary of the Theory of Chaos that studies how any change, even the smallest, can have great consequences.

The theme perfectly matches the spirit of Lucca Comics & Games and to fully and best represent the three acts of this work has been called an unsurpassed guru: Yoshitaka Amano.

Great returns

In this new and original way, the 2024 edition of Lucca Comics & Games turned out to be simply memorable, also because it was marked by returns in style, first among all that of Squid Game 2. Thursday 31 October, in fact, the creator, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk, along with the protagonists Lee Jung-jae and Wi Ha-jun, came to meet fans from all over the world to spoil some news of the second season. It should be remembered, in fact, that despite 2 years since its launch, Squid Game remains the most popular series on Netflix and the second season will be available on the platform at the end of 2024.

One Piece has also returned, having already begun celebrating its 25th anniversary in cities such as Milan, Berlin, London, Paris and Madrid on 5 May, to celebrate the birthday of Monkey D. Luffy, the famous straw hat pirate. The celebrations ended in Lucca with two great guests from Japan: Tatsuya Nagamine, director of One Piece in recent years, and Kenji Yokoyama, historical animator of all episodes.

The game as a means of union and sharing

This year, too, there were plenty of moments of play, understood as a tool for global communication, sharing and inclusion. Fans particularly got into Star WarsTM: Unlimited, the easy-to-learn collectible card game that requires players to explore galaxies and possibilities by challenging each other through the most famous characters from Star Wars.

The game was also an “excuse” to launch a world premiere: if in fact, all over the world, the pre-release of “Il Crepuscolo della Repubblica” took place on Friday 1 November, at Lucca Comics & Games was already unveiled on Wednesday 30 October. An unmissable opportunity, therefore, for all Star Wars fans!

Little evergreen chills

Children of the nineties remembered with love and nostalgia the series of novels “Little Chills” written by Robert Lawrence Stine under the pseudonym of Jovial Bob Stine. The author was present at the 2024 edition of Lucca Comics & Games, for the first time in Italy, to meet his fans from all generations. If the game in box, in fact, dates back to 1995, the movies are from 2015 and 2018, while the TV series is from 2023.

The most anticipated guests

For its 25 years, Lucca Comics & Games has decided to invite guests of exception. The first is Kazu Kibuishi, an author who unites different souls and reaches the hearts of young readers by accompanying them to discover fantastic worlds through his graphic novels. And in Lucca, his saga entitled “Amulet” has found its epilogue: the ninth and last volume was presented during the festival and, at the same time, it was possible to visit the exhibition “Kazu Kibuishi: charms on paper” to the Doge’s Palace to pay tribute to his exceptional talent.

It continues with Scott Snyder, a pseudonym he uses since school, thanks to close collaborations with Star Comics and saldaPress is getting the most prestigious awards internationally and with Peach Momoko, in collaboration with Panini Comics.

And again, Karen Berger, editor of Berger Books, the acclaimed graphic novel series by Dark Horse Comics, was expected. His name has already been included in the Ninth Art so much that, in 2018, he was inducted into the prestigious Will Eisner Comics Hall of Fame. Along with her was also Richard Bruning, one of the most important graphic designers in the comics industry, known for being DC’s Design Director from 1985 to 1990, working on Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen and starting DC’s Collected Editions line.
