Italian villages to visit in April – spring colors and atmospheres

Travel ideas between picturesque villages and spring views from north to south

April is among the best months to discover Italy’s villages, thanks to a mild climate, blooming landscapes, and historic centers still far from the summer crowds. It’s the ideal time to indulge in short itineraries, immersed in nature, history, and traditions that come back to life.

From the hinterland: villages among rivers, hills and paths

Among the first places to include in a spring trip is Borghetto sul Mincio, a small Venetian village overlooking the river, known for its water houses, ancient mills, the Ponte Visconteo, and the nearby Scaligero Castle. With the arrival of April, the landscape is transformed thanks to the awakening of the vegetation that runs alongside the Mincio. Making this period even more fascinating is its proximity to the Sigurtà Garden Park, famous for its spectacular tulip blooms. Also not to be missed is the local gastronomic tradition, with its love knots, very thin tortellini that symbolize the place.

In the heart of Umbria, Spello combines artistic heritage and landscape. The village preserves important Renaissance remains, including the Baglioni Chapel in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, frescoed by Pintoricchio. From the historic center you can take the Via degli Ulivi, a panoramic route that leads to Assisi, among hills of olive trees and views of the valley.

In Tuscany, Anghiari is one of the best-preserved medieval villages in the Tiber Valley, a hilly area crossed by the Tiber and characterized by an agricultural landscape dotted with small historic centers. The village extends along a ridge overlooking the valley, with walls, period buildings and an urban structure that has remained intact over time. He is also known for the Battle of Anghiari in 1440, now recounted in the Museum of the Battle and Anghiari.

Remaining in central Italy, Brisighella, in Emilia-Romagna, represents a perfect balance between architecture and landscape. It is famous for Via degli Asini, an ancient elevated and covered road, built for defensive purposes and unique in its kind. All around lies the Vena del Gesso Romagnola Park, which in spring becomes the ideal destination for hiking and trekking.

Continuing south, you reach Castelmezzano, in the heart of Basilicata, within the Gallipoli Cognato – Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park. The village is nestled in a landscape of spires and rocky pinnacles, distinctive elements of the Lucanian territory. The town follows the morphology of the rock, with houses, stairs and alleys that follow it the trend. In addition to the hiking trails, it’s worth trying the Flight of the Angel, an adrenaline-pumping experience that allows you to admire the landscape suspended between the mountains.

Towards the sea: villages on coasts and promontories

Overlooking the sea, Cervo is a jewel of western Liguria made up of carruggi –the typical narrow streets of Ligurian historic centers– and stairways. It all revolves around the church of San Giovanni Battista, known as the Corallini church, built between the 17th and 18th centuries thanks to the proceeds of coral fishing, an activity that long influenced the local economy along with oil production. Behind the village, the Ligurian hinterland enriches the seascape with terraced hills and olive groves, typical of this stretch of coast.

Best known as a summer destination, Polignano a Mare is no less charming in spring, when you can stroll more calmly through its white alleys and admire the view from Lama Monachile and the Domenico Modugno seafront, without the chaos of high season. Houses perched on the cliff and terraces suspended above the sea define the profile of the village, open towards the Adriatic. Finally there is Castelsardo, in Sardinia, perched on a promontory overlooking the Gulf of Asinara. The medieval village is centered around the Doria Castle, now home to the Museum of Mediterranean Weaving, which chronicles the processing of plant fibers, one of the most deeply rooted artisan traditions in the area. April is the ideal time to explore it and enjoy the first walks on the beaches, still far from the tourist season.
