Autumn brings a rich calendar of interesting events, from traditional exhibitions to the most original installations. It is the ideal time to put on the agenda exhibitions and events not to be missed in October 2024. 

Italian cities are tinged with warm autumn colours and preparing to become the perfect backdrop for exhibitions and events in museums and galleries.

From north to south, the Belpaese welcomes a culturally intense month during which it combines a varied proposal of art, creativity and innovation. 

Berthe Morisot. Impressionist painter 

When and where: from 16 October 2024 to 9 March 2025 in Turin 

The GAM – Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino inaugurates, thanks to the collaboration with the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, the exhibition celebrating the only painter among the promoters of the impressionist movement, Berthe Morisot. In addition to telling his contribution, the exhibition highlights the artist’s ability to grasp fleeting moments and the fragility of human essence. 

Hayez. The workshop of the romantic painter 

When and where: from 17 October to 1 April 2025 in Turin

From mid-October, at GAM – Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, it will be possible to visit the exhibition of known works, less known and unpublished by Francesco Hayez, emblem of Italian Romanticism. 

Mohammed Sami: Isthmus  

When and where: from 19 March to 13 October 2024 in Turin 

At the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo is still underway the first Italian exhibition on Mohammed Sami. The selected paintings guide visitors through the thereness, that perception of feeling in an indefinite and almost suspended dimension. 

Heliopolis: Marko Tadić  

When and where: from 18 May to 20 October 2024 in Turin 

In the first weeks of October, it is still possible to visit the exhibition of Marko Tadić at PAV Living Art Park. Most of the works by the Croatian artist interpret Yugoslav socialist modernism through dialogue with the work of some colleagues from the 1950s. 

Movie Icons 

When and where: from 29 May 2024 to 13 January 2025 in Turin

The National Cinema Museum, hosted by the Mole Antonelliana, hosts the exhibition Movie Icons: props, memorabilia and costumes coming directly from the Hollywood film sets that have made the history of cinema. 

Ayrton Senna Forever  

When and where: from 24 April to 3 November 2024 in Turin 

The National Automobile Museum (MAUTO) pays tribute to the late Ayrton Senna, thirty years after his death, with a sports exhibition. Among the symbolic cars of his career to the exceptional images, visitors will enter the sporting and private life of the car driver. 

International Fair of the White Truffle of Alba  

When and where: from 12 October to 8 December 2024 Alba 

In October returns one of the most important gastronomic events of the year, the International Fair of the White Truffle of Alba. In these weeks you can participate in tastings, markets, cooking classes and events that revolve around the valuable mushroom. 

TUTTOPLESSI  

When and where: from 5 October to 17 November 2024 in Como 

Palazzo del Broletto welcomes the collection of sixty years of technological research by Fabrizio Plessi, forerunner of audiovisual art and video installations in our country. His art represented a real technological revolution but even today, as the exhibition shows, it can give interesting stimuli. 

Munch. The inner cry

When and where: from 14 September 2024 to 26 January 2025 in Milan 

Also in October, the Royal Palace pays tribute to the painter Edvard Munch, famous for his masterpiece The Munch Scream. The solo exhibition is an immersion into the artist’s life and work through paintings, drawings and prints from the Munch Museum in Oslo. 

Picasso. The Stranger 

When and where: from 20 September 2024 to 2 February 2025 in Milan 

Palazzo Reale is the setting for over eighty works by Picasso, all related to his perception of “stranger” during his stay in France. The works of this retrospective come directly from the Musée National Picasso-Paris. 

Farout Live Arts Festival  

When and where: from 3 to 13 October 2024 in Milan 

Milan hosts the Farout Live Arts Festival, a flow of contemporary art, music, theatre and design produced and hosted by BASE Milano.

Jean Tinguely  

When and where: from 10 October 2024 to 2 February 2025 in Milan 

At the Pirelli HangarBicocca, a retrospective is held on Jean Tinguely, the Swiss sculptor pioneer of kinetic art. The movement of his works offers a different perspective on the idea of static art object. 

I am a Dragon. The true story of Alessandro Mendini 

When and where: from 13 April to 13 October 2024 in Milan 

At the Triennale Milano, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain has organized a retrospective of the works of the artist, designer and architect Alessandro Mendini. From private and public collections, the works highlight the complexity of his art within the international context. 

Hiroshima Appeals 

When and where: from 25 September to 27 October 2024 in Milan 

Hosted by the ADI Design Museum, Hiroshima Appeals collects posters created by the Japan Graphic Designers Association and the Hoshima International Cultural Foundation to commemorate the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and to promote a message of peace.

Miranda July: New Society 

When and where: from 7 March to 14 October 2024 in Milan 

There is time until mid-October to visit the exhibition dedicated to the director and writer Miranda July and get lost among installations, projects and short films. Among the many works stands out F.A.M.I.L.Y. (Falling Apart Meanwhile I Love You), an installation that documents the collaboration between July and some performers on Instagram.   

Ugo Mulas. The photographic operation 

When and where: from 10 October 2024 to 2 February 2025 in Milan 

Palazzo Reale welcomes the autumn season with a retrospective on Ugo Mulas. The common thread running through the known photographs and the unpublished shots that capture the reality of an era is the relationship between the photographer and Milan. 

The Renaissance in Brescia. Moretto, Romanino, Savoldo. 1512-1552 

When and where: from 18 October 2024 to 16 February 2025 in Brescia 

The Museum of Santa Giulia dedicates a large exhibition to the illustrious exponents of the Brescian Renaissance, Alessandro Bonvicino il Moretto, Girolamo Romanino and Giovanni Gerolamo Savoldo. The selection of works by the three artists tells the complexity and richness of the sixteenth century in Brescia.  

Eleonora Duse Contemporary myth

When and where: from 10 October 2024 to 2 February 2025 in Venice 

Palazzo Cini is the perfect setting for the exhibition dedicated to Eleonora Duse, one of the actresses who shaped our country’s theatre. Eleonora Duse Mito Contemporaneo offers a privileged look at photographs, documents and objects that tell the legendary artist. 

Helmut Newton. Legacy 

When and where: from 24 March to 24 November 2024 in Venice 

The Photography Rooms are home to one of the most complete exhibitions by Helmut Newton, retracing the life and artistic parabola of the photographer. The exhibition also contains some shots of Newton at La Serenissima that accentuate his unconventional style and at the same time elegant. 

Eduard Angeli. Silentium  

When and where: from 13 April to 24 November 2024 in Venice 

Throughout October it will still be possible to visit the exhibition Eduard Angeli. Silentium in the Sale Warehouse at the Zattere. The enigmatic stillness and the unsettling silence of his works reign supreme in this exhibition that pays tribute to the spiritual association of the artist with Venice.

Breasts  

When and where: from 18 April to 24 November 2024 in Venice 

The female breast is the theme of the collective exhibition hosted by ACP Palazzo Franchetti. The paintings, sculptures, photographs and films of more than thirty artists aim to deepen the representation of the breast in various fields of art, from the past to the present. 

Psyche at the Mirror. Omnia vincit amor  

When and where: from 13 September 2024 to 9 February 2025 in Modena 

In Modena, at the BPER Banca Gallery, there is an exhibition entitled Psyche allo specchio. Omnia vincit amor.  Looking at the FestivalFilosofia, the exhibition revolves around the theme of psyche or rather how culture has interpreted myth within the human soul. 

Martin Parr. Short & Sweet 

When and where: from 12 September 2024 to 6 January 2025 in Bologna 

The city’s Civic Archaeological Museum has collected selected photographs by the British author in an exhibition that traces his career. Within the exhibition, there is no doubt that the cultural and social contradictions of consumerism stand out. 

Helen Frankenthaler. Painting without rules 

Where and when: from 27 September 2024 to 26 January 2025 in Florence

The rooms of Palazzo Strozzi house a selection of works by the American artist Helen Frankenthaler from both the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation and various museums and private collections. The special feature of the exhibition is the dialogue between the works of the painter (forerunner of abstract expressionism) with the work of other distinguished colleagues, among whom stands out Jackson Pollock. 

Cell XVIII (Portrait) 

When and where: from 22 June to 20 October 2024 in Florence 

Until 20 October, at the Museo degli Innocenti in Florence, you can visit the exhibition Cell XVIII (Portrait), which brings for the first time the works of Louise Bourgeois in the city. Coordinated by the Museo Novecento, the Louise Bourgeois project in Florence allows you to fully immerse yourself in its peculiar visual language. 

Federico Barocci Urbino. The emotion of modern painting 

When and where: from 20 June to 6 October 2024 in Urbino 

The first Sunday of October will be the last day to visit the exhibition dedicated to the heir of Raphael at the National Gallery of Marche. The drawings and paintings of Federico Barocci have been grouped into thematic sections to tell the story of the study that made the artist one of the most sought-after authors of sacred art in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. 

Rome Film Festival 

Where and when: from 16 to 27 October 2024 in Rome

With the arrival of October, the Rome Film Festival returns to the splendid Auditorium Parco della Musica, born from the genius of Renzo Piano. Italian and international premieres will attract artists and celebrities on the red carpet. Some events directly related to the event will be held in other dream settings, such as Villa Borghese. 

Botero 

When and where: from 17 September 2024 to 19 January 2025 in Rome 

Palazzo Bonaparte hosts an exhibition dedicated to the artist Fernando Botero, famous for the sinuous shapes of his characters in paintings and sculptures. Between roundness, three-dimensional effects and bright colors, transports visitors into the hyperrealistic world of Botero. 

80’s Dark Rome 

When and where: from 11 September to 10 November 2024 in Rome 

The Museum of Rome in Trastevere collects over two hundred shots of Dino Ignani able to tell the underground life of the capital in the eighties through the faces, aesthetics and fashion of the protagonists of the time and the habitués of the dark scene. 

TIZIANO, BELLINI, BRONZINO. Masterpieces from the Borghese Gallery at Palazzo Barberini 

When and where: from 1st August to 27th October 2024 in Rome 

Open until the end of October at Palazzo Barberini, the exhibition boasts more than fifty masterpieces from the Galleria Borghese (affected by restoration work), including the masterpiece by Giovanni Bellini (Madonna and Child), the female figure portrayed by Raphael (Woman with Lyocorno) and the refined duality of Titian (Sacred Love and Profane Love).

Environments 1956 – 2010 Environments by Women Artists II  

When and where: from 10 April to 3 November 2024 in Rome 

At the Maxxi – National Museum of 21st Century Arts, you can visit the exhibition Environments 1956 – 2010 Environments by Women Artists II for the whole of October. The works by international artists highlight women’s contribution to building immersive spaces and challenge common narratives that have been highlighted by colleagues. 

Antonio Ligabue in Sorrento 

Where and when: from 5 August to 16 November 2024 in Sorrento 

In October you can visit the anthological exhibition dedicated to Antonio Ligabue at Villa Fiorentino. The paintings and sculptures exhibited fully express the expressive capacity and evolution of the tortured artist. 

The Gods return. The bronzes of San Casciano  

Where and when: from 5 August 2024 to 12 January 2025 in Reggio Calabria 

The National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria continues to host the exhibition The Gods Return. The bronzes of San Casciano. The exhibits were found in the thermal complex of the Bagno Grande di San Casciano dei Bagni and opens a window on the practices of Etruscans and Romans related to the baths. 

Chagall. Dream of love

Where and when: from 20 April to 27 October 2024 in Conversano 

October offers the last opportunity to attend the exhibition of the Russian painter at the Polo Museale – Castello Conti Acquaviva D’Aragona. Surreal landscapes characterized by bright colors and clean lines trace his tormented life and artistic production. 

Mitoraj. The Gaze, Humanitas, Physis  

Where and when: from 26 March 2024 to 31 October 2025 in Syracuse 

The open-air exhibition dedicated to the sculptural painting of the Polish artist Igor Mitoraj continues in October in the setting of the Archaeological Park of the Neapolis in Syracuse. The monumental works of the artist project the gaze beyond aesthetic beauty and bring it to a timeless dimension.
