Urbino: what is it and where is it?

Urbino is a city of the Marche located on the hills in a strategic position.Its importance is due to the fact that here originated the Renaissance.

The city is located inland in the province of Pesaro and Urbino and overlooks the Adriatic Sea. The territory is mostly hilly and is located at the foot of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.

What to do and see in Urbino?

In the city of Urbino there are many things you can do and see such as visiting one of the many historic buildings. The first is undoubtedly the Ducal Palace which was the nerve centre of the Renaissance.

Built in 1444, it consists of 80 rooms that now house the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche where the works of Raphael, Titian and Piero della Francesca are exhibited. The great painter Raffaello Sanzio was born in the city of Marche and it is possible to visit his birthplace.

But that’s not all, in fact you must know that the historic center of Urbino is uphill and you can access it through narrow alleys. There are also helical ramps. This extraordinary engineering work allowed the Duke to reach the stables directly from the Palace.

Urbino: its history

The city of Urbino has an ancient history dating back to Roman times. In fact in this period it became a fortified city for its strategic position particularly important.

In the following centuries it was the scene of foreign dominations as when it was invaded by the descent of Charlemagne who handed it over to the church. From here began the dynasty of the Counts of Montefeltro. Later it passed to the lordship of La Rovere until 1631 when it returned to the Holy See.

In the Renaissance Urbino was an important center for the flourishing of mathematical disciplines and abstract art. This was the ideal place for the birth of great ingenuities and talents that made the city famous all over the world.

Urbino: here’s what to eat

You should know that the traditional cuisine of the Marche is mainly based on the quality products of the territory. In Urbino you can not taste the local meats and cheeses. Another traditional dish is pasta such as passatelli with parmesan and breadcrumbs.

Always as a very popular first course there are cappelletti that are traditionally served in broth. Very interesting is also the crescia sfogliata which is very similar to the piadina romagnola. This can be stuffed with local meats and cheeses.

As for the sweets dedicated to the Christmas period, try the Bostrengo a traditional dessert similar to the Tuscan pan forte. Another typical dessert is the ciambellone alla marchigiana. Do not forget the tiramisu and the straccadenti with almonds.
