Wine and food tradition of Lake Garda
Knowing a place and its territory means also and above all tasting its typical dishes and tasting local wines; and Lake Garda, in front of this, is second to none. The delicacies on the table are always accompanied by excellent wines and, thanks to the hospitality of the restaurateurs, it creates a cheerful and convivial atmosphere!
Here’s what you should definitely taste:
- bigoli with sardines: derived from Padua, it is fresh egg pasta very similar to spaghetti that is sautéed in a pan with fresh sardines just browned with extra virgin olive oil, a clove of garlic and a handful of parsley;
- tortellini di Valeggio sul Mincio: consist of puff pastry filled with mixed meat (beef and pork), mortadella, chopped vegetables, rosemary, white wine, cheese and nutmeg presented in meat broth or seasoned with butter and sage;
- polenta carbonera: is one of the typical dishes of Lake Garda, as well as a very poor and ancient dish based on polenta, extra virgin olive oil and Monte Baldo cheese;
- Carne Salada: on Lake Garda in Trentino and Lombardy you can taste the carne salada, a piece of beef left to marinate and then flavored. It is eaten raw, seasoned with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, or cooked with beans;
- Lake Garda fish: fish is the protagonist of many dishes of Lake Trentino, especially the grilled pollen, grilled carpione, pike in sauce, grilled sardines and cod;
- Torbole broccoli: with an intense flavor, this vegetable takes its name from the vegetable gardens of Torbole and Linfano, where it is grown. It consists in the main ingredient of many recipes, especially soups, or is used as a condiment for pasta;
- cassata gardesana: to finish in beauty, here is a typical dessert of Lake Garda. Certainly the most famous is the Sicilian one, but it does not leave a dry mouth: it is made with ricotta, honey and candied fruit and is served with a trickle of olive oil EVO del Garda that, as it is well understood, is the king of local gastronomy.
A good typical dish must be accompanied by an excellent local wine and, in this, Lake Garda is famous all over the world: just think of the classic Bardolino, which goes perfectly with fish and white meat, or Custoza and Bardolino Chiaretto, perfect for the most hearty dishes based on both meat and fish.
In the areas of Peschiera and Desenzano, then, the undisputed protagonist is Lugana, the ideal white wine for fish dishes or aperitifs based on fresh cheese platters.
For those who prefer red wines, however, there are Garda bresciano, Amarone della Valpolicella which is among the best wines offered by Italy and Groppello, a delicate and spicy red wine that accompanies tasty first courses, cheeses and meat dishes.
