The Frasassi caves in the Marche region

Here is one of the most fascinating things to visit in the province of Ancona

Are you planning a trip and are you looking for something to visit in Italy? This is the article for you as I will suggest something for you to see in the province of Ancona. In fact, I will introduce you to the caves of Frasassi. This speleological complex is located precisely within the territories of the municipality of Genga. In addition to presenting this site, which is among the most visited in the Marche, I’ll explain how to get there and I’ll give you some useful tips on where to stay during the visit.

History

Their formation dates back to over one million four hundred thousand years ago. Thanks to the corrosive force of the river and the internal waters, over time these magnificent rooms have been formed, which can now be visited. The sulphurous water along with the torrent water always maintaining the same height allowed the formation of the complex.

But that’s not all: a first speleological expedition in the area was carried out in 1948. On this occasion the entrance to the Grotta del Fiume was discovered. Over the years there were other expeditions and in 1971 the discovery of the Grotta del Grande Vento took  place. In 1972 the municipality and the province formed the Frasassi consortium to safeguard and enhance the caves and the surrounding territory. The interventions carried out on this occasion consisted of the construction of a 200-meter tunnel and an internal route of 600 meters. The opening took place on 1 September 1974.

The Itinerary

For those looking for something to visit in Italy you can absolutely not miss a visit to the caves of Frasassi. These are a must-see in the province of Ancona as they offer visitors different paths that allow you to discover and admire this natural beauty.

There are three possible routes:

  • tourist route
  • adventure trail
  • special school path.

Consider this: the first involves a walk of about an hour and a quarter through all the caves. Accompanied at all times by a guide. The second route allows everyone to become speleologists for a day and thanks to the accompaniment of the guides it is possible to explore the cave even in areas where there are no walkways and lighting. The last one is dedicated to schools and combines the tour with specially prepared educational material.
