If the beaches and the sea are the main symbols of summer, the mountains and snow are what best represents the Christmas period. Christmas is expected by many people, who see this time of year as a good time to rest and relax, or to dedicate themselves to their affections.
In addition, in a country like ours, so linked to traditions, Christmas is a real opportunity to discover the hidden wonders in other places, such as the picturesque villages nestled in the Alps. Spending a few days in one of these places allows to fill the eyes with wonder, and at the same time taste many local specialties.
The unique atmosphere of the Christmas markets
In many cities of the alpine regions, one of the most beautiful traditions is certainly that of the Christmas markets. The typical market that can be found in the Alps consists of wooden houses, with inside artisans who offer unique products.
A good example are products made of wood, a material that is par excellence related to the Christmas period. There is no lack of local products, such as typical sweets, wines and much more. Visiting one of these markets is an experience that unites all the senses, starting with taste.
Among the markets that we recommend you to consider is that of Aosta, with many typical products of the Valle d’Aosta, such as cheeses and jams. Moving east there is the Christmas market in Bolzano, in Trentino Alto Adige. Also in Lombardy there are many markets very beautiful to see and visit, such as that of Bormio, where you can taste bisciola, a typical dessert of Valtellina.
The flavours of the mountains
In the previous paragraph, talking about the Christmas markets, we have already mentioned the importance of the food and wine experience. Spending a few days in the mountains means having the opportunity to taste typical dishes, which allow the palate to know and appreciate the flavors of the mountain. There is no comparison between a recipe made in the place where it was created, with the most suitable ingredients, and a replica cooked far from the mountain. Everything tastes different, and it’s not an exaggeration.
If you want to taste something warm, perfect for keeping the cold away, we recommend you try a good fondue. It is prepared in many alpine resorts, but we recommend it especially if you are in Valle d’Aosta. It is made with Fontina cheese, and you can also share with other diners.
Speaking of hot dishes: Trentino Alto Adige is the kingdom of dumplings, bread gnocchi that are often served with broth. They have a delicate and unmistakable taste.
Of course, you can’t miss the desserts, among which the strudel stands out. It is prepared in a large part of the Alpine arc, so you will not have difficulty in finding it. There may also be local variations, which you can enjoy tasting.
The Christmas show
Before going to the table, or once you have finished your meal, you could take time with the shows, events and attractions that in many places are organized near Christmas. Before preparing your trip, we recommend you to check the calendar carefully.
Usually in November, local event associations publish very detailed calendars. This way you will not risk arriving in the city after the event that interests you has already ended.
Among the most popular and famous traditions is that of the Krampus, closely linked to Trentino Alto Adige. Locals masquerade as scary Krampus, creating comic spurious and scaring tourists. They are a reminder of the folklore of Christmas. According to the myth Krampus is a demon defeated by Saint Nicholas (figure that in time was superimposed on that of Santa Claus, to the point that the name “Santa Claus” comes from Saint Nicholas).
Another tradition that is very much felt is the living nativity scene. In place of the statues there are figurants, usually local people, who play the various characters of the nativity.
If you love the ski slopes we suggest you to check which places organize real torchlight processions on the snow. It is a unique event, with flames creating an incredibly evocative atmosphere.
Plan everything in detail
The alpine resorts during the Christmas period are very popular with tourists from all over Italy, so it is very important to plan everything in detail and organize yourself in time. A good option is to stay in a hotel near the city center you want to visit, so park your car and walk along the small streets typical of these villages. This way you don’t have to worry about traffic that might be on peak days.
If you want to spend the Christmas day in these places, it is better to book, to be sure of having a table in one of the best restaurants in the area. It is not uncommon to find restaurants that offer real set menus for Christmas, with many typical specialties inside.
