Christmas in Rome: the atmosphere of the Italian capital

In Italy the month of December is ideal for visiting big cities such as the capital because the Christmas in Rome are something unique and magical. In fact on this occasion the city becomes an outdoor workshop with light markets and decorations that immerse visitors in a magical atmosphere.

Christmas in Rome: the markets

One of the most famous is the one that is set up every year from the beginning of December until the Epiphany in Piazza Navona. The atmosphere is magical and there are many citizens and tourists who every year visit the stalls where you can buy gifts, sweets and local products symbol of the festivities. This is one of the most beautiful squares in the world and during the Christmas holidays it still becomes magical.


But it is not all in fact also many other squares in the center and the suburbs host the traditional Christmas markets. Among the most fascinating is what takes place in Piazza Mazzini. Here during the year there is a market of antiques while in December it turns into a Christmas market where you can buy gift ideas and handmade Christmas decorations. You can also find regional gastronomic products typical of the holidays.

Where are the trees and cribs of the Christmas holidays in Rome?

Another typical attraction of the festivities in Rome not to be missed are the Christmas trees set up in the main squares of the city. Undoubtedly the most famous is the one in Piazza Venezia.

Another Christmas tree in Rome is that of St Peter’s Square in the Vatican. This is prepared by the traditional crib that is certainly one of the most beautiful experiences to be lived during the Christmas holidays in Rome. You should know that the tree this year comes from Rosello, a small mountain village in Abruzzo.


It is a magnificent white fir tree almost 30 meters high. The crib instead from one of the most characteristic villages of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is the small town of Sutrio in the province of Udine. The inauguration of the crib and the lighting of the tree are scheduled for Saturday, December 3 at 17.

In addition, not far from Piazza San Pietro, in Via della Conciliazione, takes place every year the exhibition entitled 100 cribs. 

Christmas holidays in Rome: trips out of town

But that’s not all, in fact you should know that the period of the Christmas holidays in Rome is ideal for a trip out of town in one of the villages of the Castelli Romani area.
