You may have heard of the famous Buranelli canal, also called Middle channel or one of the most important branches of the river of Treviso, the Botteniga. The waterway takes its name from a family of important traders on the island of Burano, or Buranelli: it is one of the most beautiful and romantic places in Italy, much loved by Treviso and is located in the historic center of the city. The Buranelli canal in Treviso is very famous because, in addition to the beautiful view it offers, on the pedestrian bridge there are several shops and restaurants where you can taste the typical local dishes.

Another curiosity linked to Buranelli is that on the opposite side of the pedestrian bridge, there is a work made by Mario Martinelli, dedicated to the Buranelli family and a few steps away the house of the famous poet Giovanni Comisso. The Buranelli waterway continues throughout the city, between medieval and Renaissance palaces, near bridges and mills to the former Santa Maria dei Battuti hospital and finally flows into the Sile, the other important river of the city. If you want to see this pearl of the city of Treviso, to reach it just walk about twenty minutes from the station, about a kilometer on foot and simply follow the signs that you can easily find in all satellite navigators.

What to see in Treviso

If you are curious about the famous Buranelli, you will surely like to know that the city of Treviso still offers several other attractions to visit. Among these there is the piazza dei Signori, characterized by an architecture dating back to the Roman era that has three important characteristic buildings: the Palazzo dei Trecento, the Civic Tower and the Palazzo del Podestà. From the Piazza dei Signori it is possible to proceed towards the Cathedral of Treviso, also known as the Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo, a Romanesque church with majestic Ionic columns at the entrance.

Another of the most curious attractions to visit in Treviso is the so-called Boobs Fountain, a work commissioned by Alvise Da Ponte and whose author is unknown, formed by a bust in which the water flows from the breast: Not everyone knows that the statue that is outside is actually an imitation and the original one is inside the Palazzo dei Trecento. The story tells that this statue was used in special moments, such as the election of the new mayor of the city: every time red wine was poured from one of the breasts and white wine from the other, to celebrate the event.

Legends of the city of Treviso

As you may have guessed, the city of Treviso with its rivers and the Buranelli, is surrounded by water and marshes: there are several legends that have been handed down since a long time, especially on the latter. Among the various stories one of the most curious tells that she used to appear in the swamps a flaming horse head this strange episode came to the ears of Cuddle, a man famous for his courage. It is said that he went into the swamp and the next day he said he did not fear anyone but that he would never return to the swamps.

Surely he had stumbled upon a sort of “magic” now explained by science, that is, the fatuous fires: This phenomenon occurs mainly in swamps and cemeteries and is probably due to the emission of light from the gases produced during the decomposition of organic matter. This phenomenon was not at all known at the time and that is why they created different stories and legends about it.
