In Italy, coffee is synonymous with tradition, culture and conviviality. You drink an espresso cup to enjoy a moment of relaxation, to chat with friends and colleagues, to start the day on the right foot. 

For many Italians, coffee is a kind of best friend with whom to face daily challenges, as well as a great excuse to (re)meet a special person. And over the years coffee lovers have spread all over the world, so much that there is no country that does not have this drink on the menu. Of course, an Italian abroad will always have something to say about the coffee offered in bars and restaurants and will always prefer to bring with him the classic mocha and good Italian ground choosing among the most prestigious brands that carry the flag of Made in Italy in the world.

An example is given by Illycaffè, a historic Italian roasting company that, since its foundation, has conquered the palate of the Italians and, over the years, has been able to make a breakthrough in the hearts of the inhabitants of the rest of the world. 

The history of Illycaffè between passion and dedication

Illycaffè is a family business that was founded in Trieste in 1933. Its founder was Francesco Illy, while currently Andrea Illy is the president, Cristina Scocchia the managing director, Anna Rossi Illy (wife of Ernesto, son of Francesco) is honorary president and Anna Illy is chief ethical officer and president of the Ernesto Illy Foundation.

What has made, and still makes, Illycaffè so loved and appreciated all over the world is the quality and impeccable taste of its coffee, which boasts a blend composed of 9 types of pure Arabica. Every day, millions of people drink at least one cup in their homes, offices, bars and restaurants.

And around the coffee, the company has built a whole world composed of machines for its preparation, designer cups and other accessories that make your tasting a moment of pure and true pleasure.  

As mentioned, its founder was Francesco Illy, who came from Hungary to Trieste immediately after the First World War. Here he falls in love with the city and his future wife, and sets out his studies in economics to try the world of cocoa and coffee, two products that at that time arrived daily at the port of Trieste.

The company was founded in 1933, while in 1935 they made their debut Illetta, the first espresso machine, and pressurization, a revolutionary method of conservation that allowed to keep the characteristics of coffee intact during the transport abroad. 

In the 1940s, Illy coffee also arrived in the Netherlands and Sweden, and at the same time Ernesto’s son, Francesco, graduated with a degree in chemistry. Thanks to him the company undergoes a turning point: it begins to pay attention to scientific research and technology, so much so that an internal chemical laboratory is created. In the 1950s, however, Illycaffè began to sell also ground coffee in smaller cans and therefore suitable for domestic consumption.

In 1974, coffee was served in pods, a kind of “replica” of the typical bar espresso that can be enjoyed comfortably at home or in the office. Shortly after, in 1988, the company filed a patent that allows it to digitally select only “perfect beans”, while in the nineties they made their appearance the cups Illy Art Collection.

Today, Illycaffè is a brand known and appreciated all over the world.

The shop of Illycaffè offers a wide and varied choice, able to satisfy anyone, including the most demanding fans. It starts with ground coffee, capsules and waffles made from only 1% of the best Arabica beans, available in different formats.
