Bay of San Cataldo: the treasure chest
The coastal stretch between Trappeto and Terrasini is dotted with a series of bays and coves characterized by sandy or pebble beaches and breathtaking landscapes.
Overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare, from the blue waters to the expanse of pebbles mixed with sand up to the Norman church that stands on the nearby beach: the Bay of San Cataldo is a real gem. It offers a unique view of the rocky coast thanks to the staircase built overhanging the sea.
The beach widens from near the mouth of the river Nocella and stretches to the ruins of the Tower of San Cataldo, but can only be visited along a steep path and a steep staircase.
This cove is the place where the Angevin fleet landed, which in the fourteenth century began their history in Sicily and where a bunker was built during the Second World War.
On the edge there is a cove with a church dating back to the Norman period characterized by a crypt and remains of a furnace in which pottery was produced.

Once at the end of the staircase, visitors will find themselves in a small hidden cove surrounded by rocks and crystal clear waters. The atmosphere in this bay is magical and the contrast between the majesty of the overhanging staircase and the serenity of the place below is extraordinary. It is ideal for connecting with yourself and with nature.
But be careful: can you bathe here? No, despite being rich in beauty and history, the beach of the district of San Cataldo pays the price for the pollution of the mouth of the Nocella stream due to industrial waste discharges. The problem originates from the river Nocella and from the tributary Puddastri that passes through Terrasini, Partinico, Trappeto and Montelepre and leads to the beach all the waste encountered along their course.
You can swim in the nearby waters, such as those of Ciammarita beach.

San Cataldo Bay: where it is and how to get there
We are in Palermo and more precisely between Trappeto and Terrasini, in Baia di San Cataldo can be reached by taking the State Road 113 and taking the dirt road towards the district of San Cataldo.
Once you have crossed the detour for a few hundred meters, then, you must continue on foot walking along a stretch of beach and climbing among the rocks.
Being full of stones and brushwood for about thirty meters, it would be better to wear closed and comfortable shoes and walk carefully.
What to do in and around Trappeto
The Bay of San Cataldo between Terrasini and Trappeto can be the starting point for a trip along the coast of the Gulf of Castellammare.
From the sea view of Trappeto you can reach Balestrate and visit the Mother Church consecrated to Sant’Anna or the Church of San Pietro. From Balestrate you can get down to Alcamo Marina, dividing the time between the coast, the trap and the old town.
You can reach the village of Castellammare del Golfo to visit interesting monuments and attractions, such as the various churches (the Chiesa Madre and the Chiesa della Madonna della Scala) and the Arab Norman Castle.
Continuing in the opposite direction, instead, from San Cataldo you can reach Palermo in less than an hour by car, passing through Punta Raisi and Isola delle Femmine.
What to eat?
The stop between Terrasini and Trappeto and in other places in Palermo can turn into the perfect opportunity to taste the typical flavors of Sicily.
The cuisine of this land is characterized by dishes such as arancine, caponata, baked pasta and fish. How can we forget pasta with sardines?
It is famous for its “street food”, with panelle and croquettes, pancakes of chickpea flour and potato croquettes, which are often served for a quick snack.
The culinary journey cannot end without having tasted the typical sweets, among which we remember the Sicilian cassata and cannoli.
