Sanctuary of Madonna del Covolo in Crespano del Grappa

The sanctuary of the Madonna del Covolo is located at the foot of Monte Grappa, in Crespano del Grappa, to remember a Marian apparition. Built by the famous architect Antonio Canova, whose mother was originally from Crespano, it is the first in which Canova experimented with the Pantheon style with columns that support the triangular tympanum.

The sanctuary of the Madonna del Covolo is located at a height of 600 meters, here you will know its history, what to do and see in the surrounding area and what gastronomic specialties this area offers.

The history of the sanctuary is linked to the legend of how in the twelfth century the Madonna appeared to a shepherdess of Crespano del Grappa. The child, deaf and dumb, during a storm had taken refuge in a cave to find shelter. The Virgin appeared to her and told her to go to the inhabitants of Crespano and to tell them that she wished for a chapel to be built there in her memory. She regained her sight and hearing and fulfilled the request.

The first church was built here in 1300 and then modified in 1541 and then in 1605. The current construction took place between 1804 and 1809 by the architect Antonio Canova of Possagno who preserved the ancient church, incorporating it in the new building.

The road was built in 1844 thanks to the intervention of numerous groups of volunteers from nearby areas. The day of Good Friday of the year following the opening a boulder broke off from the mountain crushing the sanctuary and destroying the sacristy and presbytery. The statue of the Madonna was instead recovered incredibly intact at the bottom of the valley.
