Between the 4th and 10th December, a cinema and literature festival, the Noir Film Festival, takes place in the cities of Milan and Como. This event is characterized by the projection of 10 films that are absolute previews selected from the best novelties of the genre that were produced during the year. Within the event there are organized meetings and discussions with Italian writers and directors of the genre. In this article I’ll give you some tips about the event and how to reach it…
Just think: the event has become one of the 50 most interesting international events and has been compared to the famous American Independent Film Festival, Sundance. The festival was born in 1991 as an original experience that intends to present the thriller genre to the world of cinema and literature, and the main theme is mystery. Here television, cinema, literature and new media are all present making it one of the most interesting events on the subject.
A film competition takes place during the show, featuring 10 previews of the genre among the most interesting of the year. These are judged by an international jury that grants the Noir in festival Prize to the best Film, the Jury Special Prize, and the Best Interpretation Award. During non competing events such as Fear at Midnight, the great unpublished international successes and the most famous horror films are screened. It also hosts retrospectives and homage dedicated to the international stars of Noir.
But it’s not all … The festival also has a place for literature thanks to the meetings that are promoted each day with the best mystery writers from all over the world. Here are also two important awards:
- Raymond Chandler Award
- Giorgio Scerbanenco Award.
The latter is attributed to the best Italian novel published during the year.
Where it takes place and how to enter
Starting from the 2006 edition, the festival has taken place in two locations and on two separate dates. The first part takes place in Milan from 4th to 6th December, while the closing part takes place in Como from 7 to 10 December.
The places interested by this event are:
- social theater Como

- Oberdan space.
Consider this: the first two locations are in Como and are easily accessible from the city train station. All events taking place here provide free entry until the seats are finished. At the IULM 6 meetings are held inside the Auditorium and in the Hall of the 146. Here too the entrance is free until available. In the Anteo space, entrance is free for literary meetings while for the projections the cost of the ticket is 8 €. In the last location you can access the screenings at a cost of € 7.50.
How to reach the events and where to stay
Milan and Como are connected to the main Italian cities via the motorway network. The nearest airports are those of Malpensa and Linate from which there are public transport links and taxis for the two locations. By train you can reach Milan by getting to the stations of: Rogoredo, Lambrate and Milan Central. Instead, Como is the station from which Como Lago can be reached.
Wait there’s more … regarding your stay I recommend you book at the B & B La Corte fiorita in the center of Como. The price of the stay is on average around 120 € per night for two people. Alternatively, if you prefer the center I suggest Hotel Sanpi, near Porta Venezia, in the city center. The cost of the overnight stay is € 85 per person.
