International collaboration against counterfeiting
Safeguarding the Made in Italy is a strategic mission to protect one of the pillars of the Italian economy. This crucial theme was the focus of the event “Protecting Made in Italy: the fight against counterfeiting”, organized by Il Sole 24 Ore in collaboration with Difesa Servizi, at Villaggio Italia.
The location, set up on the occasion of the arrival of the Amerigo Vespucci – the iconic training ship of the Navy engaged in a world tour – was the perfect symbol of Italian excellence in the world. During the conference, the strategies needed to tackle counterfeiting and the fundamental rules for operating safely in global markets, such as the UAE, one of the world’s major trade hubs, were discussed. Among the issues raised, the need for strengthened cooperation between governments, companies and organizations to counter a phenomenon that damages not only the economy but also the image of Italy abroad.
The Italian Sounding, a global problem
A fundamental aspect of counterfeiting related to Made in Italy is the so-called “Italian Sounding”. This phenomenon refers to the improper use of names, colors, images and brands that recall Italy, applied to products that have nothing to do with our tradition. According to data from Coldiretti, the economic value of Italian Sounding in the world exceeds 120 billion euros a year, twice the turnover of authentic Italian food exports. Among the most imitated products are cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano, wines and salami, but also pasta and olive oil.
Alarming data on counterfeiting
Counterfeiting is not limited to the agri-food sector. Clothing, footwear, luxury goods and Italian design are among the main targets. Confindustria estimates that the global market for counterfeit products is around $460 billion, representing 2.5% of world trade. For the Made in Italy, this phenomenon leads to a direct loss of over 8 billion euros per year and the disappearance of thousands of jobs.
The UAE, a strategic partner
The UAE, with its role as a commercial crossroads, represents a strategic partner for Italy in the fight against counterfeiting. Opportunities for bilateral collaboration were explored during the event. In particular, the importance of strengthening customs measures, increasing controls on local markets and raising consumer awareness about choosing authentic products was discussed.
Cultural diplomacy as a key to success
The event highlighted how the protection of Made in Italy is not only through legal and technological actions, but also through cultural diplomacy. The presence of Amerigo Vespucci – symbol of Italian excellence – has embodied this approach, promoting not only the Italian product, but also the values of creativity, quality and tradition that make our country unique.
The conference concluded with an appeal for international cooperation and a commitment by all parties involved to strengthen synergies in order to protect Italy’s productive heritage. Made in Italy is a treasure to be cherished, not only for the economic value it represents, but also for the cultural identity and image of our country in the world.
