Selva di Cadore is a small village in the province of Belluno in Veneto, located within the beautiful setting of the Fiorentina Valley in the Dolomites. Located at about 1300 meters altitude, it consists of small Ladin villages where you can spend pleasant moments in summer and winter.
Today it is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Veneto and is the ideal destination for those looking for peace and tranquility in contact with nature. The valley is surrounded by some of the largest Dolomite mountains such as Monte Pelmo, Civetta and Marmolada.

Selva di Cadore, here’s what to see
The wonderful Fiorentina valley where Selva di Cadore is located offers many things to see for its visitors, starting with the wonderful views of the Dolomites. In these small villages you can find an authentic atmosphere where to discover the local traditions and culture. This is an integral part of the place and you can discover it in the Civic Museum of Val Fiorentina named after Vittorino Cazzetta.
The museum was established in 1982 and is spread over four floors within a municipal building. It is a palentological, archaeological and historical museum whose main findings are a mesolithic burial complete with funerary equipment found in Mondeval and the enormous scale of the surface of a boulder fallen from Mount Pelmetto. This one contains dinosaur prints.
Another thing to see in Selva di Cadore are the historic villages such as Toffol and L’Andria. Among the things to see there is an old mill from 1880 which is the last still existing in Selva di Cadore. The charm of small alpine villages with wooden barns and animal troughs is still preserved here today.
The Mondeval plateau is one of the most important high-altitude archaeological sites in Europe. These areas between the X and the VII century B.C. were inhabited by Mesolithic hunters. In the centre of the plain there is an imposing erratic boulder that preserves in an exceptional way the testimonies and the finds of that epoch.
The recipes of traditional cuisine in Selva di Cadore
Selva di Cadore is the ideal place for those who want to discover the flavors and traditional recipes of the Venetian Dolomites. Today many restaurants and shelters offer recipes that in the past were prepared during the holidays. One of the most famous dishes are the Casunziei or ravioli in the shape of a crescent filled with a mixture of red turnips and potatoes. Quesyi are seasoned with oil and melted butter. Another traditional first course is canedei a soup of barley or beans.
As for the recipes of the main dishes, game and polenta are the main ingredients. Finally, as far as desserts are concerned, the strudel cannot be missed which has become the dessert symbol of the Dolomites. Another specialty to discover is zopes, a poor dessert made from stale bread.
