History and origins of the Castle of Campello Alto

According to the most accredited testimonies, Castello di Campello Alto was built by the will of the baron of Burgundy Rovero di Champeaux, around the tenth century.

The baron, who came to Italy with the Duke of Spoleto, was granted the fief Gualdi Ranieri, later confirmed by the Duke’s son, Holy Roman Emperor, in 896.

It is precisely from Rovero di Champeaux that the Campello family and the name of the village itself derives.

With a leap forward in time we reach 1247 when, the cardinal legate Capocci recognized the Municipality of Spoleto the property of Campello.

During the fourteenth century, the Castle was the subject of assault by mercenaries Eugubini gonfaloniere Spoleto Pietro Pianciano who were not able to take possession, Indeed: the Counts of Campello immediately took possession of the castle and the inhabitants of Spoleto had to repay the damage they had suffered.

The control of the Campello lasted until 1390, when the counts ceded to the local Massari all the feudal rights to the castle that remained united with Spoleto until the eighteenth century, when it became common to itself.
