Prosecco, The Best Loved Wine of the Belpaese
Among them all, the Prosecco DOC white wine produced exclusively in the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia-Giuliacertainly deserves a special mention. It is the most exported Italian wine abroad (in 2014 exceeded Champagne for the first time for number of bottles sold in the world) and now it is a candidate for the title of the Olympus among the Italian excellences. In fact, just recently the President of the Veneto Region Luca Zaia, who was present at this important wine event, has announced plans to nominate the Prosecco hills in the heart of the province of Treviso, in order to become part of the inestimable Unesco World Heritage.
Indeed, it was the early sixteenth century that in Trieste, to give more visibility to the main local product, Ribolla, declared that it was the natural heir of a famous wine of antiquity, the pucino, celebrated by Pliny in his Naturalis Historia, a favorite for its medicinal qualities. The need to distinguish the Ribolla of Trieste from the other wines of the same name produced in the Gorizia area and at lower cost in Istria, then lead to the end of the century with the development of a precise geographic characterization, suggested by the identification of the place of production of antiquity, the noble castellum wine Pucinum with Castello di Prosecco, near the homonymous village.
Over the centuries, the production in the area of origin diminished, meanwhile expanding its development more and more in areas of the province of Treviso and the hills of Conegliano, Valdobbiadene and Asolo. It was mentioned for the first time in a poem in 1754 and has always been well appreciated. Prosecco has experienced a real boom since the 90s, and in twenty years has become the most exported local wine in the world. A real treasure Made in Italy, a unique taste created by some of the richest vineyards in the world, an elegant and delicate wine that certainly deserves to be considered among the greatest richnesses of humanity.
